Title: Research Associate, Diversity, Workforce, and Educational Outcomes Department: Department of Research, Milestone Development, and Evaluation Reports To: Director, Milestones Outcomes Research Work Schedule: Full Time Job Summary The Research Associate, Diversity, Workforce, and Educational Outcomes is responsible for providing support and oversight for research and evaluation into the impact of key ACGME initiatives on the development of the physician workforce and outcomes of graduate medical education (GME), aligned with the current strategic plan of the organization. The Research Associate will focus on examining the impact of ACGME policies, tools, and initiatives to address issues in diversity, equity, and inclusion within medical education. Initially, the Research Associate will work closely with and help to coordinate research activities and analysis with the Milestones research team. Greater autonomy is expected as the analyst grows in the position. In doing so, the Research Associate will work with key members of the ACGME’s Department of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and the ACGME Review Committees, as well as other departments and teams across the organization. In particular, the Research Associate will coordinate research and educational strategies, feedback, and dissemination of results. The principal foci of the Research Associate’s research activity will include lessons learned through health disparities; diversity and equity research and programs; workforce outcomes; and educational projects and programs. The Research Associate will also work with outside organizations to collaborate on mission-driven research and to inform them of ongoing research and educational activities at the ACGME. Primary Duties and Responsibilities Prepare protocols for original research investigations related to: diversity, equity, and inclusion; Milestones data analysis; workforce trends in specialty choice and educational outcomes; and, other population health issues in medical education. Prepare and lead research protocols to investigate key physician workforce issues. Prepare and lead research protocols to investigate issues of bias within GME, including internal ACGME programs and initiatives. Provide guidance and timely, supportive research consultation and service to others in the organization. Under the guidance of the Director, Milestones Outcomes Research, work with the Chief Research, Milestone Development, and Evaluation Officer, the Director, members of the Research Steering Committee, and other research staff members on research projects relating to diversity, educational outcomes, and workforce trends. Provide analytic support for certain accreditation activities, resident/fellow experience, and diversity, equity, and inclusion. Provide analytic support on the ACGME’s research efforts in workforce outcomes. Serve as needed on internal ACGME committees. Develop and maintain positive relationships with co-workers and other organizational stakeholders. Contribute to creating an environment that values, empowers, enriches, and supports employees. Contribute to the organizational culture by supporting and contributing to quality improvement in research and evaluation efforts. Demonstrate support of and commitment to the mission and values of the organization. Demonstrate a commitment to and comply with the organization’s policies and procedures. Other duties as assigned. Education, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required Master’s degree in public health or a health care research-related field. A minimum of four years of experience with progressive responsibility in medical education, public health, and/or population health. A strong background in research methodology and statistics. Ability to develop and study assessment methods and tools using educational theory and empiric evidence. Strong skills in outcomes-focused research, including data analysis, modelling, and interpretation. Strong skills with statistical software (e.g., SAS, SPSS). Experience with SQL databases. An understanding of database structure and design, and strong analytic skills. Strong communications and writing skills, including presentation skills around research, for working with committees, external stakeholders, members of the Board of Directors, all levels of staff, and representatives of other organizations. Preferred Ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and meet and adapt to rapidly changing deadlines. An understanding of the ACGME mission and organizational procedures. Demonstrated skill in developing data collection instruments (surveys or interview guides) for collecting primary data, and analyzing secondary data. Proven track record of scholarly publications and presentations. Position requires the significant use of standard office equipment, such as a computer, keyboard, mouse, photo copier, fax machine, telephone, as well as basic Microsoft packages, such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint; statistical software packages; and SQL database skills. Working Conditions Most of the work of the Research Associate, Diversity, Workforce, and Educational Outcomes is done in the ACGME office with the typical physical demands of an office environment. During the COVID-19 pandemic, ACGME employees are working remotely until further notice. The Research Associate will need to be able to efficiently and effectively work remotely. This position requires occasional weekend or evening work in conjunction with attendance at courses, conferences, or meetings, and at times, a heavy time commitment, exceeding normal work hours. While performing the duties of this job, the Research Associate, Diversity, Workforce and Educational Outcomes: May be required to participate in meetings or courses for long periods of time, either in person or virtually. Will frequently be required to participate in meetings via Zoom or other video conferencing platforms. Note, this is particularly relevant while working remotely. Will frequently be required to work for extended periods of time at computer terminal using various computer programs and other computer tools. Must be willing to work some weekends as needed.
