Director, Institutional Outreach and Collaboration
Job Summary
The Director, Institutional Outreach and Collaboration is responsible for working with the Executive Director, Institutional Accreditation to develop, implement, and evaluate a comprehensive program of educational outreach and collaboration with the graduate medical education (GME) community, individuals, stakeholder organizations, and institutions focused on leadership within Sponsoring Institutions and clinical learning environments.
Department of Sponsoring Institutions and Clinical Learning Environments Overview
The Department of Sponsoring Institutions and Clinical Learning Environments maintains standards for institutions sponsoring resident and fellow physician education programs, and monitors adherence to those standards (the Institutional Requirements) to ensure the consistent delivery of high-quality GME. The department’s goals include fostering innovation and improvement in GME as relates to clinical learning environments, increasing emphasis on educational outcomes, and increasing efficiency and reducing the burden of accreditation.
As a component of its accreditation system, the ACGME’s Clinical Learning Environment Review (CLER) Program assesses the GME learning environment of ACGME-accredited Sponsoring Institutions and their participating sites. The CLER Program evaluates six specific areas within the learning environment: patient safety; health care quality; care transitions; supervision; well-being; and professionalism. The CLER Program emphasizes the responsibility of the Sponsoring Institution for educating the future physician workforce on how to engage systems of care to improve the safety and quality of patient care.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Organizational Planning and Implementation
- Works closely with the Executive Director, Institutional Accreditation; Senior Vice President, CLER; and Chief Sponsoring Institutions and Clinical Learning Environments Officer to develop a strategic plan for education and outreach to various stakeholders associated with GME and the clinical learning environment. These efforts will range widely from small local and regional meetings to large national meetings, workshops, webinars, and forums.
- Works closely with the Executive Director, Institutional Accreditation and the Senior Vice President, CLER to set objectives, establish formats and agendas, and identify speakers for education and outreach events.
- Collaborates with the Department of Education to coordinate educational activities for Sponsoring Institutions and CLEs.
- Establishes a planning group for each event, and advisory group when appropriate, and coordinates and directs meetings and teleconferences of these groups to develop and finalize content and logistics, including development of tools and materials and related continuing education (CE) credit.
- Provides support (both planning and logistical) to collaborative efforts that convene multiple organizations toward the common goal of improving the clinical learning environment. These efforts will range widely from supporting groups of two to three organizations to supporting large collaborations involving 10 or more organizations.
- Works closely with the Executive Director, Institutional Accreditation; Senior Vice President, CLER; other internal staff members; and external consultants to develop and implement a comprehensive communications plan for educational outreach activities relating to the clinical learning environment.
- Develops and implements individual communications and advertising plans for specific events in coordination with the Communications Department.
- Develops content for web pages and communicates with Editorial Services and Web team to ensure proper translation to site.
- Serve as editor for electronic and print materials related to CLE and Sponsoring Institutional educational activities, in coordination with the Communications Department.
- Works closely with the Senior Director, Program Evaluation to support ongoing efforts to collect data for purposes of CLER Program evaluation and improvement (e.g., coordination of focus groups).
- Works closely with the CLER Program staff to manage requests for speaking engagements and coordinate and align educational efforts involving the CLER Program (e.g. participation in workshops, lectures, etc.).
- In collaboration with the Executive Director, Institutional Accreditation and Senior Vice President, CLER, conceptualizes and coordinates institutional and CLER sessions at the ACGME Annual Educational Conference, including courses, poster sessions, and didactic sessions.
- Maintains relationships and collaborates with other associations and professional organizations with shared educational goals; represents the ACGME at meetings of associations and professional organizations.
- Develops and conducts ongoing evaluation of institutional outreach and collaboration, including evaluation of related educational activities.
- Supervising and Managing Staff
- Directs staff members to work with the appropriate personnel, both internal to the ACGME and in external venues, to organize and execute meeting logistics (e.g., venue space planning and AV, invitations and registration, preparation and distribution of meeting materials, on-site support).
- Directs staff members to work with appropriate ACGME personnel to secure CE credit and certification for all relevant constituencies and manage the process of awarding credit and certification.
- Directs staff members to coordinate and align with the Department of Education in the design and maintenance of databases for use with all educational activities.
- Assists in preparation of the annual institutional and CLER Program budgets, as well as budgets for individual educational activities.

Education, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Required
- Master’s degree in education with expertise in adult learning principles.
- Five or more years of postdoctoral experience developing and delivering educational programs and services in clinical learning environments.
- Knowledge of management systems and technology and their role in the design, management, and delivery of educational programs.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, including ability to work with diverse levels of professional staff members and collaborate effectively as a member/leader of a team.
- Excellent oral communication and writing skills.
- Highly motivated, self-directed, with demonstrated ability to work independently and on a team.
Preferred
- Doctorate degree in education.
- A clear understanding of graduate medical education and experience working with medical educators.
- Experience with systems-based thinking and health care quality improvement.
- Proficiency with multimedia content creation.
- Experience in administration and/or supervision.
Equipment
Position requires the significant use of standard office equipment, such as a computer, keyboard, mouse, photo copier, fax machine, telephone, etc.
Working Conditions
- Most of the work of the Director, Institutional Outreach and Collaboration is done in the ACGME office with the typical physical demands of an office environment. During the COVID-19 pandemic, ACGME employees are working remotely until further notice. The Director will need to be able to efficiently and effectively work remotely.
- Must be willing and able to attend out of state meetings/conferences/workshops of two to five days in duration.
- This position requires occasional weekend work and work exceeding normal work hours.

- Will frequently be required to sit in meetings for long periods of time.
- Will frequently be required to participate in meetings via Zoom or other video conferencing platforms. Note, this is particularly relevant while working remotely.
- Will frequently be required to sit and work for extended periods of time at a computer terminal using various computer programs and other computer tools.
- Must be willing and able to travel.
