JOB OVERVIEW

The Research Analyst will play an important role in advancing the ACGME’s strategic mission of improving health and health care by participating in research studies pertaining to ACGME’s accreditation standards, GME training experience, and outcomes of medical education. To do this, the Research Analyst will be responsible for managing, editing, and analyzing data sets from multiple origins. The Research Analyst will contribute to the design, implementation, and dissemination of research. The Research Analyst will provide consultation to others as circumstances require. The Research Analyst will be part of a team that generates the ACGME’s research agenda. The Research Analyst will aid others in the department by sharing expertise in research methods, analytical technique, and data management. 

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Draw on career experience to merge, edit, an analyze ACGME’s internal datasets (Milestones, case logs, program characteristics) and datasets obtained from external entities including survey data, claims data, registry, and possibly data from electronic health records (EHR), learning assessments, and similar sources to support research efforts of the ACGME. 
  • Translate complex analytical specifications into practical analytical products by executing analysis and providing sound interpretation of results for a variety of audiences.
  • Support others in the department with quantitative research projects as well as ad-hoc requests of summary reports of various datasets 
  • Be responsible for editing data, identifying and resolving data quality issues, creating variables, and selecting data elements for use in analysis with high attention to detail. 
  • Merge and process data owned by other parties and ensure data handling and presentation of analytical findings are in compliance with licenses for use of those data. 
  • Maintain thorough documentation regarding data management and research procedures. 
  • Design and execute methodologically sound research studies alone and in collaboration with colleagues from the ACGME and external academic and industry stakeholders 
  • Interpret results and draw insights from research findings. Act as co-author, and eventually author, in presentations to ACGME’s leadership and staff, scientific conferences, in scholarly journals, or lectures. 
  • Evaluate and summarize the extant literature relevant to each project.  
  • Show initiative. Demonstrate the ability and willingness to assume greater responsibility for identifying and executing studies that advance the ACGME’s research agenda. 
  • Participate in generating the Department’s research agenda.
  • Identify data from 3rd parties that may advance our research initiatives. 
  • Keep departmental leadership informed of work-related developments. 
  • Participate in the ACGME’s research and information technology working groups and committees.  
  • Project a knowledgeable, courteous, and businesslike demeanor during interactions with internal and external stakeholders regardless of their expertise or level of organizational authority. 
  • Stay abreast of developments in medical education. 
  • Strictly adhere to ACGME’s standards for data governance 
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

 

Minimum 

  • Master’s degree from an accredited university in public health, education, economics, econometrics, psychology, psychometrics, health informatics, political science, or related field. 
  • Four or more years of relevant experience conducting research related to education, learning, health services delivery, and/or physician behavior.
  • Demonstrated familiarity with the use of clinical data and medical educational assessment data, such as the ACGME’s Milestones data. 

 

Preferred

  • Seven or more years’ experience in a related field.  
  • Doctoral degree from a regionally accredited university in a relevant field.  
  • Competence in regression and hierarchical analysis.  
  • History of co-authorship of publications in peer-reviewed journals, and or presentations to scientific assemblies. 

 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILL SETS, AND ABILITIES

  • Proficiency in working with either SQL, Python, or R for data management and analytical purposes (i.e., retrieval, merger, audit).
  • Expert knowledge in performing descriptive statistical analysis, such as frequencies, precents, measures of dispersion, cross-tabulations, and tests of statistical significance.
  • Advanced knowledge in performing multivariate, inferential, and predictive statistical analyses to shed light on phenomena in medical education.
  • Proficiency using statistical software such as SAS or SPSS.  
  • Proficiency in merging and appending complex health care data sets from numerous sources.
  • Competence in constructing images, graphs, and tables to explain the meaning of data. 
  • Competence in identifying and summarizing relevant extant literature using search engines such as PubMed.
  • Competence in Microsoft Office suite of applications, particularly Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.  
  • Ability to articulate oneself clearly and concisely, in the English language. Ability to communicate effectively with technical and non-technical audiences.  
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively as needed to accomplish tasks.  
  • Ability to project respect and appreciation for the thoughts and ideas of others

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT/CONDITIONS

  • This position is based in a typical office environment with no specific or unusual physical or environmental demands.
  • Most of the work is performed in the ACGME office and/or home office with the typical physical demands of an office environment.
  • This position is eligible for a principal duty location that is either remote, hybrid, or on-site.
