ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY: The Payroll Accountant/Auditor will work with the US Shared Services team in Bowie, MD. This individual will report to the Director of the Payroll department. The position was established for the purpose of providing support to department activities with specific responsibility for ensuring the accuracy of final payroll reports, general ledger posting and reconciliation, spreadsheets, funds distribution; responding to inquiries and/or requests for data and/or reports; providing timely and accurate payroll research.

PRIMARY DUTIES:

Accounting:
  • Responsible for all aspects of accounting, recording, reporting, and coordinating with Payroll and Accounting, for regular payroll accounting, company-wide, including processing bi-weekly, monthly, Canadian payroll interfaces; loan and stock incentive plans, discretionary contribution, severance, and PTO; and reconciliation of all payroll related accounts on an individual and company-wide basis.
  • Reconciliation of the Payroll void/manual checks on a monthly basis for all companies.
  • Reconciliation of Payroll accrual on a monthly basis to ensure properly calculated.
  • Reconciliation of payroll clearing account on a monthly basis.
  • Reconciliation of payroll cash account on a monthly basis.
  • Perform monthly reconciliation on a consolidated basis on all payroll related accounts and investigate any reconciling items in a timely manner.
  • Prepares various accounting schedules and summaries.
  • Collaborates with accounting personnel to determine the need for new accounts and revisions in the account structure.
  • Works with other staff accountant monthly to close books.

Audit:
  • Performs periodic internal audits of various payroll areas.
  • Prepares materials for external or internal audits.
  • Provides supporting documentation and/or information on internal process that is required for audit.
  • Assists in implementing accounting procedures for the purpose of providing internal financial controls throughout the company and ensuring compliance with established accounting practices and all applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Compiles payroll data from a variety of sources for the purpose of providing summaries to other personnel and/or ensuring compliance with established guidelines.
  • Processes a wide variety of payroll documents and materials for the purpose of disseminating information to appropriate parties.
  • Research discrepancies of payroll information for the purpose of ensuring accuracy and adherence to procedures.
  • Identifies discrepancies with payroll and/or benefit information and/or documentation (e.g. payroll, benefit provider/s,) for the purpose of ensuring accuracy of records and employee payments.
  • Responds to inquiries regarding payroll procedures for the purpose of providing necessary information for internal/external audits.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the payroll department.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Minimum 3-5 years of payroll accounting experience.
  • Bachelor's degree in related field preferred (Business, Taxation, Accounting, Finance, Human Resources, etc.).
  • Travel required to FTI office(s).

PREFERRED SKILLS:
  • American Payroll Association CPP or FPC certification highly desirable.
  • PeopleSoft payroll processing module experience.
  • Experienced user of Microsoft Office suite of products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Strong communication skills both verbal and written.
  • The ability to multi-task, work independently and set priorities.
  • Team oriented person who can focus on details.
  • The ability to work effectively in a high growth environment and a rapidly changing organization.
  • Ability to work effectively with tight deadlines.
  • Attention to detail?
  • Basic understanding of internal controls/SOX compliance environment.
