PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The Laboratory Animal Sciences Program (LASP) provides exceptional quality animal care and technical support services for animal research performed at the National Cancer Institute at the Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research. LASP executes this mission by providing a broad spectrum of state-of-the-art technologies and services that are focused on the design, generation, characterization and application of genetically engineered and biological animal models of human disease, which are aimed at the development of targeted diagnostics and therapies. LASP contributes to advancing human health, developing new treatments, and improving existing treatments for cancer and other diseases while ensuring safe and humane treatment of animals.

KEY ROLES/RESPONSIBILITIES

• Conduct and oversee husbandry procedures in a suite dedicated to housing immunocompromised mice utilizing strict microisolator technique in an ABSL II environment
• Animal handling in semi-rigid isolator
• Training animal care staff on proper procedures and providing day-to-day work direction to husbandry staff
• Ensuring users and visitors have been trained by the Facility Manager or Laboratory Animal Medicine prior to independent enty and carrying out work in the suite
• Work with Facility Manager and/or Laboratory Animal Medicine in closely monitoring facility activities to ensure proper procedures are understood and followed including introduction of materials to the suite, utilization of appropriate disinfection methods, and adherence to PPE requirements
• Work with Facility Manager and/or Laboratory Animal Medicine on regular review of procedures and implementing improved practice
• Ordering, inventorying, and receiving drugs, disinfectants, supplies and equipment
• Rodent colony management tasks such as breeder setup, weaning, tagging, tailing
• Conduction of technical procedures, such as the administration of experimental compounds via various routes, collection of blood and tissue specimens, tumor measurements, handling and performing work with hazardous chemical, biological materials
• Animal health monitoring and recording of phenotypic changes and measurements related to experimental treatments
• Collection of blood, tissues and diagnostic samples
• Work schedule may include weekend and holiday hours

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

To be considered for this position, you must minimally meet the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed below:

• Any combination of education and progressively responsible technical experience which qualifies the candidate to sit for the LATG Certification exam within 12 months of hire or bachelor's degree in Life Sciences or Veterinary Technology. Will encourage achievement of LATG Certification, however this is not required
• Experience in management of genetically engineered mouse models
• Ability to work in a team and communicate with management in a demanding scientific environment
• Ability to keep detailed and accurate computer records and maintain/update data in computer-based applications/databases
• Knowledge of policies and regulations governing care and use of research animals
• A bility to lift up to 50 lbs. and to wear respiratory protection equipment if necessary
• Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates with these desired skills will be given preferential consideration:

• LAT certification and ability to pass LATG exam within 12 months of hire
