Employee Type: exempt full-time
Division: AIDS & Cancer Virus Program
Facility: Frederick: Ft Detrick
Location: PO Box B, Frederick, MD 21702 USA

The Frederick National Laboratory is a Federally Funded Research and Development Center (FFRDC) sponsored by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and operated by Leidos Biomedical Research, Inc. The lab addresses some of the most urgent and intractable problems in the biomedical sciences in cancer and AIDS, drug development and first-in-human clinical trials, applications of nanotechnology in medicine, and rapid response to emerging threats of infectious diseases.

Accountability, Compassion, Collaboration, Dedication, Integrity and Versatility; it's the FNL way.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The AIDS and Cancer Virus Program (ACVP) is an integrated, multidisciplinary program that pursues basic and applied studies aimed at improving our understanding of AIDS-associated viruses, including studies intended to facilitate the improved diagnosis, prevention and treatment of HIV infection and AIDS, and AIDS related tumors, particularly those associated with other viruses such as KSHV. The Program consists of five independent but highly interactive research Sections headed by Principal Investigators, whose work spans from fundamental molecular virology through in vitro studies, to in vivo studies in non-human primate (NHP) models, to international viral epidemiology. The ACVP also has Research Support Core Groups (Cores) that provide critical and often unique technical support capabilities to ACVP laboratories and other laboratories within the NCI, NIH, and to extramural investigators.

KEY ROLES/RESPONSIBILITIES

ACVP is looking for a Scientist II to join our dynamic, interactive, multidisciplinary research team studying effective T cell responses to AIDS and cancer viruses, including engineering of T cells for treatment and prevention of infection. The successful candidate will be able to work well in a small team environment, manage multiple projects at once, and clearly present their research in both written and oral formats. Specific duties will include:
  • Design, conduct, and interpret in vitro and in vivo (nonhuman primate) studies of AIDS virus/host interactions relevant to prevention, pathogenesis, and treatment, including studies of virus persisting during extended antiretroviral drug treatment
  • Genetic engineering of rhesus macaque primary cells by retroviral transduction or CRISPR/Cas9 methods
  • Conducting and analyzing in vitro/ex vivo T cell functionality assays, single cell "omics" analysis of T cells, design and interpretation of in vivo experiments in nonhuman primate models of HIV infection, and prepare research results for presentation and publication of manuscripts

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

To be considered for this position, you must minimally meet the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed below:

  • Possession of a Ph.D. from an accredited college or university according to the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) in Cell Biology, Molecular Biology, Virology, Immunology, or related discipline. Foreign degrees must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency
  • In addition to the educational requirements, a minimum of two (2) years of experience with T cell engineering, preferably with retroviral vectors
  • Experience with nonhuman primate models of HIV infection
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates with these desired skills will be given preferential consideration:

  • Experience with cell culture and functional evaluation of primary immune cells from nonhuman primates
  • Experience with flow cytometry and related analysis software (Flow Jo or FCS Express)
  • Experience with molecular biology techniques, including PCR, ligation, transformation, plasmid preparation, restriction enzyme digest, gel electrophoresis and transfection
  • Experience with single cell transcriptomic platforms and data sets (e.g. 10X Genomics)
  • Proven track record that includes conference presentations and peer-reviewed publications

JOB HAZARDS
  • This position is subject to working with or have potential for exposure to animal(s) and/or animal material(s)
  • This position is subject to working with or have potential for exposure to infectious material, requiring medical clearance and immunizations
  • This position is subject to working with radioactive material and requires to become an approved radiation worker
