The Frederick National Laboratory is a Federally Funded Research and Development Center (FFRDC) sponsored by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and operated by Leidos Biomedical Research, Inc. The lab addresses some of the most urgent and intractable problems in the biomedical sciences in cancer and AIDS, drug development and first-in-human clinical trials, applications of nanotechnology in medicine, and rapid response to emerging threats of infectious diseases.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research (FNL) is a Federally Funded Research and Development Center (FFRDC) sponsored by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and operated by the prime contractor Leidos Biomedical Research, Inc. FNL is responsible for pursuing a unique mission in translational and applied biomedical research that is unsuitable for academia, the pharmaceutical industry, or other federal contractors. The selected candidate will join the Natural Products Support Group (NPSG) located at the NCI-Frederick campus.
The NPSG provides scientific and technical support to the Developmental Therapeutics Program (DTP) of the NCI Division of Cancer Treatment and Diagnosis (DCTD). The group is comprised of several laboratories responsible for various natural product-based support activities including extraction of plant, microbial, and marine biota; pre-fractionation of natural product extracts; isolation and identification of biologically active natural products; preforming cryopreservations and microbial fermentations; and in-vitro and in-vivo drug preparations.

KEY ROLES/RESPONSIBILITIES
- Instrument script writing, method development, and on-going support of new and existing automated laboratory processes relating to drug preparation for high through put screening (HTS)
- Conceptualize, design, develop, and implement complex experiments on automated systems and liquid handlers in support of automation and drug preparation laboratories
- Perform database design, documentation, and support for new and existing projects
- Drug preparation of synthetic and natural product compounds for HTS
- Automate steps to improve and speed up the isolation and identification of biologically active natural products from plant, marine and microbial sources
- Maintain, troubleshoot and QC laboratory automation equipment
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
To be considered for this position, you must minimally meet the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed below:
- Possession of a bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Bioinformatics, Computer Science or related field from an accredited college or university according to the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA). Foreign degrees will be evaluated for U.S. equivalency
- In addition to education requirements, a minimum of two (2) years related experience
- Experience with programming software packages including, but not limited to: R, JavaScript, Python, and shell-scripting in the Linux and windows computing environment
- Experience in method qualification, laboratory automation, automated data processing, and laboratory information systems.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize multiple tasks and projects
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills and a capacity to work in a team environment
- Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Candidates with these desired skills will be given preferential consideration:
- Experience with database programming using standard tools such as Oracle SQL , PL/SQL
- Experience with Tecan liquid handlers
- Experience with liquid handling systems
- Experience with 3D printing and drawing software
- Critical thinker with the ability to breakdown complex technical requirements
- Ability to operate and maintain laboratory equipment with independence
JOB HAZARDS
- This position is subject to atmospheric conditions that would require the usage of a respirator, requiring a medical clearance
