The Frederick National Laboratory is a Federally Funded Research and Development Center (FFRDC) sponsored by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and operated by Leidos Biomedical Research, Inc. PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The Laboratory Animal Sciences Program (LASP) provides exceptional quality animal care and technical support services for animal research performed at the National Cancer Institute at the Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research. LASP executes this mission by providing a broad spectrum of state-of-the-art technologies and services focused on the design, generation, characterization and application of genetically engineered and biological animal models of human disease. The Animal Research Technical Support (ARTS) team within LASP utilizes advanced methodologies to perform research into the development of new cancer models, targeted diagnostics, and cancer therapies.

KEY ROLES/RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Works closely with the ARTS Director and a highly collaborative, multidisciplinary team to maintain strong business relationship with stakeholders.
  • Provides oversight for multiple projects, studies and staffing schedules.
  • Recording of meeting minutes and assistance in preparing of project management plans, proposals, and reports.
  • Monitors budgets, prepares study cost estimates, and tracks financial information related to project milestones and timelines.
  • Management of NAS requests.
  • Writing of animal study proposals, IBC registrations, and other regulatory reports.
  • Oversight of rodent colonies and designing of breeding strategies.
  • Maintenance of real time animal colony database (TOPAZ) and experimental database (StudyLog).

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

To be considered for this position, you must minimally meet the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed below:
  • Possession of Bachelor's degree from an accredited college/university according to the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) or four (4) years relevant experience in lieu of degree. Foreign degrees must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency.
  • In addition to the education requirement, a minimum of eight (8) years of progressively responsible experience.
  • Experience in rodent breeding colony management and associated procedures.
  • Experience in performing experimental procedures.
  • Ability to maintain precise, accurate records utilizing different software platforms.
  • Knowledge of standard operating procedures for animal facilities and the basic requirements for maintaining laboratory animals and performing scientific procedures involving animal testing and data collection.
  • Understanding of basic budgeting and resource allocation practices.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates with these desired skills will be given preferential consideration:
  • Ability to assist the ARTS Director in prioritizing multiple tasks/projects and in managing ARTS research staff.
  • Ability to oversee, coordinate, prioritize, track and report multiple concurrent projects, including those of a collaborative nature.
  • Excellent time management and organization skills; Ability to efficiently manage workload over multiple projects.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills needed to work with technical staff.
  • Must be detail oriented.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage work via electronic forms of communication.
  • Ability to work independently and to work well with others within a team environment.
  • Evidence of leadership skills.
