The Frederick National Laboratory is a Federally Funded Research and Development Center (FFRDC) sponsored by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and operated by Leidos Biomedical Research, Inc. The lab addresses some of the most urgent and intractable problems in the biomedical sciences in cancer and AIDS, drug development and first-in-human clinical trials, applications of nanotechnology in medicine, and rapid response to emerging threats of infectious diseases.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The Laboratory Animal Sciences Program (LASP) provides exceptional quality animal care and technical support services for animal research performed at the National Cancer Institute at the Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research. LASP executes this mission by providing a broad spectrum of state-of-the-art technologies and services that are focused on the design, generation, characterization and application of genetically engineered and biological animal models of human disease, which are aimed at the development of targeted diagnostics and therapies. LASP contributes to advancing human health, developing new treatments, and improving existing treatments for cancer and other diseases while ensuring safe and humane treatment of animals.

KEY ROLES/RESPONSIBILITIES

*Funding for one year with the possibility of a one year extension*
  • Performing high throughput genome editing screens in mammalian cells to identify genes involved with therapeutic RNA editing efficiency and efficacy
  • Therapeutic gene editing in cell models of different monogenic diseases
  • Participate in collaborative research projects which will emanate from initial work

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

To be considered for this position, you must minimally meet the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed below:
  • Possession of an BA/BS degree from an accredited college/university according to the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) in a related field. Foreign degrees must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency
  • The Postbac Program is for individuals who meet any ONE of the following criteria
  • College graduates who received their bachelor's degrees less than THREE years prior to the date they begin the program
  • Individuals who are more than 3 years past the receipt of their bachelor's degree but received a master's degree less than SIX MONTHS before they begin the program
  • Students who have been accepted into graduate, other doctoral, or medical school programs and who have written permission from their school to delay entrance for up to one year to pursue a biomedical research project at the NIH
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates with these desired skills will be given preferential consideration:

  • Basic molecular biology skills such as PCR, genomic DNA extraction, and cloning
  • Mammalian tissue culture experience and sterile technique
  • Data analysis and familiarity with running python and/or R scripts
