The Frederick National Laboratory is a Federally Funded Research and Development Center (FFRDC) sponsored by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and operated by Leidos Biomedical Research, Inc. The lab addresses some of the most urgent and intractable problems in the biomedical sciences in cancer and AIDS, drug development and first-in-human clinical trials, applications of nanotechnology in medicine, and rapid response to emerging threats of infectious diseases.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The Environment, Health, and Safety (EHS) program at the Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research and the National Cancer Institute at Frederick provide comprehensive professional EHS services to employees working in general offices, industrial shops, experimental in-vitro and in-vivo research laboratories, and healthcare settings. EHS supports government and contractor employees and programs operating across multiple campuses and other off-site locations.

KEY ROLES/RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Ensures compliance with regulatory requirements and overall efficacy of employee safety and health practices through the performance of general building and laboratory surveys, inspections, audits, equipment monitoring, procurement review and approvals, and other employee interactions.
  • Perform technical risk assessments to evaluate employee medical surveillance and training needs based on job hazards.
  • Responsible for tasks associated with the tax-free alcohol programs, controlled substance programs, and autoclave monitoring programs.
  • Provide support to the biosafety team to develop, update, and/or deliver EHS and Biosafety training courses, to include performing research, data collection and analysis, data consolidation, and use of training software systems. Contribute to research, drafting, and implementing biosafety guidance documents to communicate best practices related to biosafety disciplines, to include equipment, disinfectants, and research laboratory topics of interest.
  • Perform accident investigation and emergency response for injuries/illnesses/incidents on a routine basis.
  • Occasionally supports hazardous spill cleanup monitoring, assists in hazard decontamination, and provide assistance and other services/support to other EHS programs as needed.
  • Attends necessary training and continues professional development activities in pursuit of certifications and credentials such as RBP, CBSP, ASP, CSP, CIH, etc.
  • Maintains effective communications with a broad range of employees.
  • This position will be designated as an Occasional Driver and will be responsible for complying with the Leidos Biomedical Use of Government Owned or Leased Vehicles Policy.
  • Learn and apply a variety of procedures used in safety and health biomedical research setting; deliver a high-quality work product; produce a professional work product that includes effective written and/or oral communications; be familiar with and/or learn pertinent computer software/database systems.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Position requires strong customer service skills to support the Frederick National Lab for Cancer Research biomedical research community, where all duties are conducted in a collegial manner.
  • Maintain confidentiality pertaining to occupational exposures, incidents, medical and similar data. Familiarity with PHI and PII preferred.
  • Successful completion of college level general coursework in algebra, physics, biology, and chemistry; demonstrated knowledge of standard scientific methods and measuring instruments. Familiarity with safety regulations and standards to include OSHA, COMAR, ANSI, NFPA, BMBL, etc. preferred.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

To be considered for this position, you must minimally meet the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed below:

  • Possession of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university according to the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA). Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education.
  • Foreign degrees must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency.
    • EHS Officer I - No additional related experience is required beyond the educational requirements
    • EHS Officer II - In addition to the educational requirements, a minimum of two (2) years of related experience is required
  • Ability to independently coordinate and prioritize multiple tasks.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office and web-based applications.
  • Familiarity with data entry and use of a variety of databases.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance.
