The Frederick National Laboratory is a Federally Funded Research and Development Center (FFRDC) sponsored by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and operated by Leidos Biomedical Research, Inc. The lab addresses some of the most urgent and intractable problems in the biomedical sciences in cancer and AIDS, drug development and first-in-human clinical trials, applications of nanotechnology in medicine, and rapid response to emerging threats of infectious diseases.

Accountability, Compassion, Collaboration, Dedication, Integrity and Versatility; it's the FNL way.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

Laboratory of Human Retrovirology and Immunoinformatics (LHRI) in ADRD investigates HIV pathogenesis in vitro using Immunological and virological approach. The studies aim to support NIAID clinical trials for people living with HIV and develop novel immune therapies for multiple drug resistance.

In HIV clinical therapy, even though effective combination therapies using multiple anti-HIV drugs have been developed, it is impossible to eradicate the HIV gene from HIV-infected patients. During the treatment, HIV genes get substitution/deletion/insertion and acquire multiple drug-resistant or defective mutants. It was considered that the viruses containing the dysfunctional genes are carried over in latently infected cells and persist the prolonged infection. LHRI has recently found that the defective genes can undergo genetic recombination and reemerge as an infectious virus. The successful candidate will be involved in this study.
