The Frederick National Laboratory is a Federally Funded Research and Development Center (FFRDC) sponsored by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and operated by Leidos Biomedical Research, Inc. The lab addresses some of the most urgent and intractable problems in the biomedical sciences in cancer and AIDS, drug development and first-in-human clinical trials, applications of nanotechnology in medicine, and rapid response to emerging threats of infectious diseases.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

Support for FNLCR technology transfer and strategic agreement activities.

KEY ROLES/RESPONSIBILITIES

The Viral Oncology Section (VOS) studies the role of gamma herpesviruses in cancer, specifically Kaposi's sarcoma herpesvirus (KSHV). In addition to our research on KSHV epidemiology, transmission and pathogenesis, the VOS performs viral quantitative PCR assays supporting clinical trials conducted at the HIV and AIDS Malignancy Branch, NCI Bethesda. These assays are performed under Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments protocols (CLIA) which certifies that our results can be used to make clinical decisions.

Trainee duties include:

  • Shadowing laboratory processes related to the viral quantitative assays.
  • Learning other laboratory procedures used for the characterization of the humoral and cellular immune response to KSHV ( i.e. Luminex and ELISpot).
  • Assisting in the characterization of a new digital PCR system and its application in the interpretation of low KSHV copy number samples.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

To be considered for this position, you must minimally meet the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed below:
  • Possession of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college/university according to the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA).
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates with these desired skills will be given preferential consideration:
  • Students with strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Students with strong organizational skills.
