The Frederick National Laboratory is a Federally Funded Research and Development Center (FFRDC) sponsored by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and operated by Leidos Biomedical Research, Inc. The lab addresses some of the most urgent and intractable problems in the biomedical sciences in cancer and AIDS, drug development and first-in-human clinical trials, applications of nanotechnology in medicine, and rapid response to emerging threats of infectious diseases.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:

The Facilities Maintenance and Engineering (FME) mission is to support the NCI at Frederick in their mission to cure cancer and AIDS. FME is responsible for the physical campus - its research laboratory space, administrative space, the infrastructure that supports the buildings, and the landscape that surrounds them. In addition, we are responsible for managing, planning, designing, and construction management of renovations at the FNLCR.

KEY ROLES/RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Work directly with the maintenance team on proper function of complex building automation systems, and a major role in executing work orders and preventive maintenance tasks, ordering of components, and jobsite coordination with technicians and sub-contractors
  • Maintain logs and records of equipment operations and understand and operate computer-based building automation systems (BAS)
  • Analyze results and may develop test specifications and electrical schematics
  • May prepare technical reports with recommendations for solutions to technical problems
  • Assist in diagnosing and repairing routine electronic control system malfunctions
  • Make programing level changes to equipment sequences and alarm parameters
  • Institute corrective action and/or inform supervisor on any deficiencies found while performing the job
  • Assists HVAC mechanics with maintenance and repairs of the building air systems on the site
  • Assists with writing, or contributing, to the AR process
  • A full range of physical motion is required with the ability to tolerate prolonged standing and frequent bending, stooping, and reaching, climbing stairs, and climbing ladders on a regular basis is required
  • Work is performed indoors and outdoors, occasionally in environments that are dusty, noisy, or which could have work hazards
  • Occasionally working beyond normal duty hours, including weekends and holidays
  • Contributes to the overall success of Operation and Maintenance Department by performing other essential duties and responsibilities as assigned
  • Position may be subjected to periodic safety and compliance checks
  • Acts as a backup for the facility manager on an as-needed basis

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

To be considered for this position, you must minimally meet the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed below:
  • Possession of a BS degree from an accredited college or university (according to CHEA). (Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education)
  • Foreign degrees must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency
  • In addition to the education requirements, a minimum of two (2) years progressively responsible job-related experience
  • Possesses formal BAS training certifications
  • Familiarity with Schneider Electric Controls or equivalent platforms and understanding of control programming and graphics for control systems
  • Knowledge and understanding of various communication protocols used in the industry including BACnet, Lonworks and Modbus
  • The ability to work independently, as well as on a project team
  • Ability to read blueprints
  • Read and understand control wiring schematics
  • Ability to diagnose and repair malfunctions on a wide variety of electronic, pneumatic, and mechanical instruments (VFD's/hardware controls)
  • Experience in safety practices in the trade
  • Ability to routinely lift and carry up to 15-30 lbs.
  • Walking, standing, climbing stairs, bending, stooping, and working in confined areas, potential exposure to particulates, vapors, or noisy environment
  • Ability to work in a team environment providing dedicated support to our customers and maintenance staff
  • Knowledgeable in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • Ability to work in a variety of circumstances, including climbing ladders, scaffolds, lift equipment, and roofs in heat/cold/day/night conditions
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates with these desired skills will be given preferential consideration:
  • Experience in a wide range of precision using AutoCad software
  • Experience in a wide variety of complex electronic controls, sensory and recording systems used in research
  • Knowledge of advanced electronic, pneumatic, and mechanical principles
  • Use of Blue Mountain software
  • Familiarity with Accuvalve air control valves and room pressure monitoring.
  • Familiarity with energy management systems, HVAC systems, temperature controls, and related/integrated systems
  • Familiarity with Supervisory Control, and Data Acquisition System (SCADA)
