The Frederick National Laboratory is a Federally Funded Research and Development Center (FFRDC) sponsored by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and operated by Leidos Biomedical Research, Inc. PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The Clinical Services Program's mission is to perform sequential studies using samples obtained from patients with cancer, AIDS, chronic granulomatous disease, or other diseases associated with immunologic dysfunction. The Clinical Support Laboratory (CSL) provides dedicated support to clinical investigators in the Center for Cancer Research (CCR) of NCI. Services include specimen processing and testing in support of clinical trials as well as testing in support of investigator initiated basic research. The laboratory also provides dedicated support to specific programs/projects sponsored by the Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics, NCI and the Division of Clinical Research, NIAID. The CSL also provides shared service support that is available to other NIH investigators

KEY ROLES/RESPONSIBILITIES

The Research Technician will be responsible for preparation of human and (occasionally) non-human primate blood samples for cryopreservation. The project includes login and processing of blood samples to include separation of plasma, density gradient separation for recovery of viable mononuclear cells, preparation of cells pellets for DNA/RNA extraction, staining and fixation of samples for flow cytometry, and other duties as assigned.

The project involves work in support of research on blood or other potentially infectious materials. In addition to processing of samples, the job entails interaction with NIH scientific and administrative personnel, ordering and inventory of reagents and supplies, transmittal of cryopreserved samples to the Central Repository Facility and preparation of shipments for return to the NIH Bethesda campus. A secondary responsibility is to provide backup support to fill-in with other work as needed.

These clinical samples will be obtained primarily from cancer patients enrolled on clinical trials. The position requires working an alternative schedule from 09:00 AM- 5:30 PM.
  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university (CHEA) is required. (Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education). Foreign degrees must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency.
  • Foreign educated candidates who have completed part or all of their education outside of the United States must have their foreign education evaluated by a company-approved accrediting organization to assure that it has met the equivalency of the qualifications of degree work in the United States.
  • Life sciences degree or at least 20 semester credit hours of life sciences courses.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Requires use of aseptic technique, attention to detail, and the ability to work accurately and follow established Standard Operating Procedures with a reproducible outcome.

Knowledge of general laboratory skills and ability to organize workflow to multitask.

Must be able to demonstrate proficiency with computers and accurately enter information into database programs. Excellent verbal and written communication/customer service skills.

Ability to lift and carry up to 25lbs.

There may be potential exposure to human and non-human primate blood/body fluids/tissues; work may also involve standing, walking, climbing, rapid mental/muscular coordination, good vision, working alone or closely with others.
