The Frederick National Laboratory is a Federally Funded Research and Development Center (FFRDC) sponsored by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and operated by Leidos Biomedical Research, Inc. The lab addresses some of the most urgent and intractable problems in the biomedical sciences in cancer and AIDS, drug development and first-in-human clinical trials, applications of nanotechnology in medicine, and rapid response to emerging threats of infectious diseases.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The Cancer Research Technology Program (CRTP) develops and implements emerging technology, cancer biology expertise and research capabilities to accomplish NCI research objectives. The CRTP is an outward-facing, multi-disciplinary hub purposed to enable the external cancer research community. The Protein Expression Laboratory (PEL) within the CRTP provides protein production services for a variety of NIH and FNLCR laboratories. The PEL creates expression constructs, expresses the encoded recombinant proteins in multiple expression systems, and purifies the recombinant proteins for use in downstream applications including biochemical and biophysical assays and structural biology.

KEY ROLES/RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Generate DNA constructs using recombinational cloning methodologies
  • Carry out PCR amplification and DNA preparations
  • Perform basic E. coli culturing techniques for propagation of DNA constructs
  • Validate DNA using a variety of QC methods
  • Generate annotated DNA sequence files
  • Control DNA and glycerol stock inventories
  • Interface with internal and external clients for delivery of DNA and glycerol stock reagents
  • Prepare DNA samples for repository shipments

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

To be considered for this position, you must minimally meet the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed below:
  • Possession of a bachelor's degree in Biochemistry, Chemistry, Biology, or a related field from an accredited college or university according to the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA). Foreign degrees must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance
  • Ability to handle multiple scientific projects with a high degree of accuracy
  • Ability to follow and apply standard laboratory production protocols and procedures
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates with these desired skills will be given preferential consideration:
  • Experience with basic molecular biology skills (PCR, cloning, sequencing)
  • Experience with SnapGene software
